Global economic impacts of antimicrobial resistance
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a natural phenomenon caused by overuse, misuse, and underuse of antimicrobials in healthcare, agriculture, and industry. Socioeconomic, demographic, and environmental factors contribute to AMR, including climate change, population growth, urbanization, and plastic and metal pollution. Addressing AMR collectively is crucial for global economic stability and development. The authors use the G-Cubed model to quantify the economic consequences of AMR, finding a significant global economic burden and substantial economic benefits of a “one-health” approach to managing AMR.
